Will this Be the Third Time Ariana Grande gets Sued for Copyright Infringement?

by Kristin D Stephenson

Famed artist Ariana Grande may very well be on her way to having a third lawsuit. Yes, a THIRD one. In 2016 songwriter Alex Greggs, filed a lawsuit against Grande, claiming she pieced together lyrics he wrote for a different artist. According to Forbes, the song “One Last Time” is similar to “Take All Night” which is “an auto tuned dance track he wrote for pop singer Skye Stevens.” That case was later dismissed after a Joint Stipulation for Dismissal was filed by both parties. Just recently in late January, the “Dangerous Woman” is being accused of using a image created by Vladimir Kush an esteemed Las Vegas artist that painted and copyrighted the painting in 1999 and 2000. As seen in the picture below, to the right is the painting and towards the left is a snapshot of the video where she appears in the candle a minute and ten seconds into the song.

According to Billboard, “Kush seeks unspecified monetary damages and a court order to remove the video from the internet.” Last but not least, Ariana Grande my also face a third case involved her recently published song, “7 rings”. This case is more dynamic considering it involves multiple artists. When the song was released January 18th, 2019 quickly the internet exploded with videos of side by side comparisons of songs from artists such as, Soulja Boy, Princess Nokia, and even 2 Chainz. Soulja boy even went out of his way to attack Ariana Grande on Twitter and Instagram.

After making such a large revival in 2018, Soulja Boy was infuriated, many fans were quick to support him and commented below her recent posts. Now if you know how the song “7 Rings” goes, the song “Pretty Boy Swag” by Soulja Boy evidently has a similar flow.

Princess Nokia also proclaimed her 2016 song “Mine” was offly similar. “Does that sound familiar to you? ’Cause that sounds really familiar to me,” she mused over Grande’s single in a video posted on Instagram. “Ain’t that the little song I made about brown women and their hair? Hmmm, sounds about white.”

“7 Rings” chorus also bares a striking resemblance to the chorus of 2 Chainz 2011 song “Spend It.” Fans of Chainz also pointed out similarities between the setting of “7 Rings,” a pink trap house, and his Pink Trap House from 2017. The Pink Trap House was real and visitable, the primary promotional image of Chainz album promotion as well as providing free HIV testing in Atlanta. The rapper decided to instead create a remix to the song. Ariana Grande is well on her way to receive her 3rd lawsuit. Let’s see if she is able to settle this one without giving up royalties to her songs.
